Zurich rests in a valley between the Uetliberg and the Zurichberg hills, and despite its industrial growth, much of it still looks and feels as it did in the 1800s. In addition, each of the cantons of Switzerland uses its own Swiss dialect for local and internal family communication, the residents of Zurich additionally use a spoken dialect of German called Schweizerdeutsch, or Swiss German, for informal communication, and the “high” German of Germany is the official language for all business and legal communications. The many public transportation and tour alternatives on the lake and river, the shops that line their shores and the many choices for easily accessible mountaintop picnic areas all add to the wonder of the area.
